I've never tried the wool sock method myself, but that's definitely some creative improvisation. My concern would be moisture retention—did you notice any issues with dampness or rust forming on the nailer after extended use? Wool tends to wick moisture pretty well, but I'd still be cautious about trapping humidity against metal tools.

Personally, I've had decent luck with neoprene sleeves. They're designed specifically for tool protection, so they handle moisture and impacts pretty effectively. Foam sleeves seem promising too, though I'm curious about their durability over time, especially under constant exposure to sunlight and weather conditions. Has anyone here used foam sleeves long-term and noticed any degradation or brittleness?

Either way, it's always interesting to see how different solutions hold up in real-world conditions...

Yeah, about those foam sleeves—I gave them a shot last summer when redoing my shed roof. They were pretty solid at first, but after a couple months baking in the sun and getting soaked in random thunderstorms, they started looking like stale marshmallows. Brittle and crumbly isn't exactly what you want protecting your tools, lol.

Never heard of the wool sock trick before this thread though... sounds a bit like something my grandpa would rig up. He was always wrapping tools in old shirts or socks—claimed it was "rust protection," but honestly, I think he just hated throwing anything away.

Neoprene sleeves are probably your best bet overall. I've had one on my framing nailer for years now, and it's still holding strong despite some rough treatment (and me occasionally forgetting it outside overnight). Definitely beats soggy socks or crispy foam hands-down.

I've been tempted by neoprene too, but don't they trap moisture underneath sometimes? Heard a few guys mention rust issues after long periods...wondering if you've noticed anything similar with yours?

I've had mixed experiences with neoprene myself. They're great for grip and comfort, but you're right about moisture—had a nailer develop some surface rust after leaving it sleeved overnight in damp conditions. Nothing catastrophic, but something to keep an eye on...

I've noticed something similar with mine. Left my nailer in a neoprene sleeve overnight after finishing up late, and the next morning there was definitely some moisture buildup. Didn't see rust right away, but it made me cautious. Now I just make sure to wipe it down and let it air out before storing it. Seems to help keep things rust-free so far...
