I get where you’re coming from, but I actually use the hammer loop for my moisture meter sometimes. It’s not perfect, but it keeps it handy when I’m moving between rooms. Yeah, it’ll snag if I’m crawling around, but for quick checks, it’s not too bad. Maybe it just depends on what you’re doing that day?

That’s pretty much it. I’ve tried sticking all sorts of stuff in that loop—chalk line, pry bar, even a water bottle once when I was up on a steep pitch and didn’t want to dig through my pouch. For me, the hammer loop’s only really useful if I’m not crawling or bending a lot. Otherwise, it just catches on everything and drives me nuts.

I get the moisture meter thing, though. If you’re just walking around checking spots, it’s handy. But if you’re up on a roof, especially with a steep slope or working around vents and flashing, that loop can be more trouble than it’s worth. Ever had it snag on a ladder rung? That’s a quick way to lose your balance.

Curious—anyone actually use the loop for a hammer anymore? I haven’t carried a hammer in mine for years. Nail guns took over most of my work, and if I need a hammer, it’s usually in my hand or in the pouch. The loop’s more like a catch-all now.

I guess it comes down to what you’re doing and how much moving around you have to do. If you’re mostly upright and walking, sure, throw whatever fits in there. But if you’re crawling under eaves or ducking through trusses, I’d rather keep it empty or just use it for something soft that won’t jab me in the ribs.

Anyone ever try one of those magnetic loops? Wondering if they’re any better or just another gimmick...

Never tried a magnetic loop, but I’ve seen them in the store and always wondered if they’d just end up grabbing every stray nail or screw I walk past. I’m already bad enough about picking up random metal bits in my pockets. Honestly, I don’t even use the regular loop for a hammer anymore either—like you said, nail guns have kind of taken over. If I do need a hammer, it’s usually because something went sideways and I’m already annoyed, so I just keep it in my hand until I’m done.

I’ve used the loop for a flashlight a few times when I was working in the crawlspace. It’s not perfect, but better than trying to balance one on the ground or wedge it somewhere. The water bottle idea is actually pretty clever—I might steal that next time I’m up on the roof and don’t want to keep climbing down for a drink.

One thing that drives me nuts is when the loop gets caught on stuff, especially if you’re working in tight spots. Had it snag on a fence post once and nearly took my belt off with it. Not fun.

Has anyone found a way to make that loop less annoying when you’re crawling around? Or is it just one of those things you deal with? Sometimes I think about cutting mine off, but then every once in a while it comes in handy...

- I get what you mean about the loop snagging. Happens to me crawling under decking or in attics. Honestly, I’ve started flipping the loop inside my belt when I know I’ll be in tight spaces. Not perfect, but it keeps it out of the way most of the time.
- About the magnetic loop—tried one for a week. It picked up every stray screw and staple, just like you guessed. Got annoying fast. Ended up ditching it.
- I still use the regular loop for my hammer, but only if I’m up and down ladders a lot. If I’m mostly on my knees or crawling, I just set the hammer aside or keep it in hand. Haven’t found a great alternative.
- Cutting the loop off feels drastic. I’d miss it the one time I actually need it. I guess it’s just one of those trade-offs—annoying, but sometimes useful.
- The water bottle thing is smart, but I’d be worried about it falling out. Maybe a carabiner through the loop instead? Just a thought.

In the end, I think it’s just part of the job. Minor hassle, but not worth losing it completely.

That’s pretty much where I land too. I’ve cursed at that loop more times than I can count, especially when it gets hung up on scaffolding or catches the edge of a vent pipe. But then there’ll be a day where I’m halfway up a steep roof and need both hands free, and suddenly I’m glad it’s there.

I’ve tried tucking the loop inside my belt like you mentioned, but honestly, it always seems to work its way back out when I’m moving around a lot. Maybe that’s just me being clumsy, but it never stays put for long.

One thing I started doing is clipping a small carabiner through the loop instead of using it for my hammer all the time. It actually works better for holding a chalk line or even a pouch with extra coil nails when I’m running shingles. Haven’t had anything fall out yet, but I keep an eye on it if I’m leaning over an edge.

I get what you mean about magnetic loops too—they sound clever until you’re crawling around in demo debris and end up with half the roof stuck to your side. That lasted about two days for me before I gave up.

Has anyone tried those retractable tool lanyards? A buddy swears by them for keeping his hammer handy without using the loop at all, but I haven’t made the switch. Feels like one more thing to snag on something, honestly.

Anyway, for me, the loop’s annoying but not worth losing entirely. Just wish someone would invent one that disappears when you don’t need it...
