At least it makes a decent spot to hang your gloves when you’re packing up for the day.
That’s about the only “bonus” I’ve found too. I tried using the loop for a flashlight once—ended up with a bruised knee and a busted light. On job sites, I mostly see folks just ignoring it or, like you said, using it for a rag. Honestly, I’d trade it for another secure pocket any day. The only time it’s actually useful is when I’m juggling tools during punch list walkthroughs, but even then, it’s more of a nuisance than a help.
I’ve definitely tried to get creative with that hammer loop—mostly out of necessity, not innovation. One time I stuffed a roll of painter’s tape in there while I was up on a ladder, thinking I was being clever. Didn’t realize until I bent down to grab a socket wrench and the tape unspooled itself right down the steps. Not my finest moment, but at least it was a soft landing for my pride.
Honestly, I’m with you on the “extra pocket” idea. When I’m patching drywall or doing electrical, I’d rather have a zippered pouch than a swinging loop that catches on everything. I did have a neighbor who swore by using his for a can of WD-40, but that just ended up leaking all over his jeans. Guess it’s good for some comic relief if nothing else.
I will say, when I’m working outside and need to keep my gloves handy, the loop does beat stuffing them in my back pocket and sitting on them later. But most of the time, it’s just a snag hazard or a place for sawdust to collect. If tool belt designers are listening, maybe it’s time for a rethink... or at least make it detachable? Until then, I’ll keep using mine as a mobile rag holder and hope for the best.

That detachable idea would be a game changer. I’ve had more than one close call with that loop getting snagged on gate latches or ladder rungs—never fun when you’re trying to look like you know what you’re doing. I still use mine mainly for gloves too, especially when they’re wet or muddy and I don’t want to jam them in a pocket.
One trick that’s worked for me: I keep a small coil of wire or zip ties in the loop if I’m doing fencing or anything outside. It’s not perfect, but at least it doesn’t unspool like tape does, and it frees up my actual pockets for stuff I don’t want to lose. Tried using it for a water bottle once—bad move, ended up with wet pants and a bruised shin.
Honestly, if someone comes up with a way to swap out the loop for different attachments, I’d be first in line. Until then, guess we’ll all just keep improvising.
That loop’s a menace when you’re crawling around storm debris, trust me. I’ve had it snag on downed branches more times than I care to admit—almost took a header off a porch once. These days, I just thread a microfiber towel through it for wiping off wet tools or my hands. Tried hanging a flashlight there during a night job, but it kept swinging and smacking my leg... not worth the hassle. Detachable would be nice, but until then, it’s just another thing to work around.
That loop’s a double-edged sword for sure. If you’re up on a steep roof, it’s just another thing to catch on shingles or flashing. I’ve started clipping a small canvas pouch through it instead—keeps nails handy and doesn’t swing as much as a hammer or flashlight. Not perfect, but at least it’s less likely to whack your knee or get tangled in branches. Still wish they’d make it detachable...
