That drill-in-the-loop move is a classic rookie mistake—I’ve got the bruises to prove it. My go-to is using the hammer loop for a roll of tape when I’m patching up after hail. Keeps it handy and, more importantly, not swinging at my knees. I’ve also clipped a small flashlight in there for attic work, but anything heavier than a hammer just turns into a pendulum of pain. The rag idea’s underrated—sometimes the simple stuff actually works best.
Hammer loop as a rag holder is the unsung hero of cleanup, honestly. I’ve tried the flashlight trick too, but after dropping one into a wall cavity (don’t ask), I stick to lighter stuff now. One thing I’ll add—if you’re wrangling keys all day like me, that loop’s perfect for a carabiner. Just don’t try to hang your coffee mug there... unless you want a lapful of cold brew.
I’ve tried the carabiner trick for keys, but mine kept swinging around and smacking my leg—maybe I walk too fast. These days, I mostly use the loop for painter’s tape or a small notepad. Never trusted it with anything heavier than that... lesson learned after a tape measure took a dive onto tile.
I hear you on the tape measure drop—mine bounced off a ladder rung once and nearly took out a gutter. I tried hanging my water bottle from the loop one day (don’t ask why) and it just kept banging into my knee every step. Honestly, I’m not convinced that loop’s good for anything heavier than a roll of tape or maybe a rag. Anything with weight seems to end up on the ground or bruising your leg... Maybe I’m just unlucky, but I stick to stuffing my pockets now.

Man, I tried hanging my lunch from that loop once (don’t ask, it was a long day) and ended up with a sandwich that looked like it’d gone three rounds with a nail gun. I get what you mean about the bruised knees—my hammer’s left more marks on my leg than any jobsite accident. I still use the loop for my gloves, though. At least those don’t try to escape or take out my shins. Pockets are safer, but then I end up sitting on screws... can’t win.
