I get the appeal of using the loop for a flashlight or level, but honestly, I’ve had mixed results. Maybe it’s just the way I move around on steep roofs—stuff tends to bang around or even slip out if I’m not careful. I’m curious, though: has anyone tried using the loop for things like a chalk line reel? I’ve thought about it, but worried it’d get tangled or snagged.

Tried the chalk line reel in the loop a couple times—honestly, it’s a bit of a gamble. If you’re moving fast or crouching a lot, it can swing around and catch on stuff, especially if the string’s not fully wound up. What I found helps is clipping the reel to the loop with a carabiner, so it doesn’t just slide out or dangle. Not perfect, but better than chasing your chalk line down a steep pitch... which I’ve done more than once.

I hear you on the chalk line reel—those things have a mind of their own if you’re not careful. What’s worked for me is threading the reel through the loop, then running a short Velcro strap around both the loop and the reel handle. That way, it stays put but you can still grab it quick. Carabiners are solid too, but I’ve had them pop open if I’m crawling under trusses. Honestly, nothing’s perfect, but at least you’re not watching your chalk line roll down the roof like a runaway hamster... been there, done that.

- Totally get the runaway chalk line thing—had one bounce off a gutter and land in a mud puddle once.
- Velcro strap idea sounds smart, might have to steal that.
- Carabiners are handy but yeah, I’ve had them snag and unclip when squeezing through tight spots.
- Nothing’s foolproof, but honestly, just keeping the reel from rolling off the roof is a win.
- Sometimes I just wedge it in the loop and hope for the best… not always pretty, but it works most days.

I get that, but honestly, wedging stuff in the loop makes me nervous. Had a tape measure slip out mid-climb once—luckily didn’t hit anyone, but it was close. Anyone ever try using those retractable lanyards? They’re a bit bulky, but at least you’re not chasing tools off the roof. Just seems like “hope for the best” is asking for trouble, especially on steeper pitches.
