roof checkups—how often is too often?

I was chatting with my neighbor yesterday (the guy's retired and basically knows everything about home maintenance, lol), and he casually mentioned that roofs should ideally be inspected at least once a year. I was kinda surprised because, honestly, I've been in my house for like 5 years now and haven't had it checked even once. 😬

Anyway, he said something interesting: apparently, after big storms or heavy snowfall, it's especially important to have someone take a look because damage isn't always obvious from the ground. Like, shingles can get loose or small leaks can start without you even noticing until it's a bigger issue. Makes sense, I guess.

But then again, I wonder if yearly inspections are really necessary or if that's just being overly cautious? Seems like it could get pricey pretty fast. Curious what others think or if anyone has some roof horror stories to share...
