I’m planning an attic insulation top-up, but I want to inspect the ventilation path first rather than burying a moisture problem under more fiberglass.

The house and roof are both about 20 years old. The attic currently has roughly 6 inches of loose-fill fiberglass, with some thinner areas near the eaves. I can see soffit vents from outside, but I’m not sure whether the original rafter baffles are continuous or blocked by insulation. There’s a ridge vent, although I haven’t confirmed that it’s open along the full ridge.

There hasn’t been obvious dripping, but I’ve noticed a little winter condensation on a few roofing nails and some frost after very cold nights. The insulation also looks uneven near the eaves. Before adding more, I’m considering checking for:

- Clear soffit-to-ridge channels in every rafter bay
- Compressed or missing baffles
- Bathroom fan ducts terminating properly outdoors
- Air leaks around ceiling penetrations, wiring, and plumbing
- Mold or damp insulation that should be investigated rather than covered

Which of these checks are reasonable for a careful DIY inspection, and what findings would make you stop and bring in a roofer, insulation contractor, or energy auditor before adding insulation?

Either it's a flimsy piece of plywood that's impossible to open without it falling on your head, or it's some weird hatch that never seals right and lets drafts in all winter. Tried fixing mine last weekend and ended up with insulation everywhere...ugh. Just me having terrible luck, or is this like a universal homeowner curse?

I came across this local news story yesterday about a family whose attic caught fire because their roof vents were totally blocked up. Apparently, the vents had gotten clogged with debris and nesting material from birds and squirrels over time, and no one noticed until it was too late. Luckily, the family got out safely, but the damage to their house was pretty extensive.

Honestly, I never even thought about checking my own roof vents before reading this. I mean, who really climbs up there regularly just to peek at the vents? But now I'm kinda paranoid, you know? I did some googling afterward, and apparently blocked or improperly installed ridge vents can cause all sorts of issues - moisture buildup, mold growth, overheating, and even structural damage. Yikes.

The article also mentioned that a lot of homeowners don't realize how important proper attic ventilation is for energy efficiency and preventing ice dams in winter. I always assumed those vents were just kinda there for looks or something minor like that. Guess I was way off.

Anyway, after reading this, I'm thinking about getting someone to come check mine out. I'm not exactly comfortable climbing ladders and poking around on my roof myself (heights aren't really my thing, lol). But I'm curious if anyone else has ever had issues with their roof vents or attic ventilation? Or maybe you've got some tips on what to look for or how often to check them? Seems like something most of us overlook until there's a problem...

So, winter's creeping up again and I'm finally fed up with the cold draft coming from my attic hatch. Every year I tell myself I'll fix it, and every year I just shove a towel or blanket up there and call it good enough. But honestly, it's not working anymore. My heating bill is getting ridiculous, and I'm pretty sure half the heat is escaping right through that stupid attic door.

I took a closer look yesterday, and it's basically just a thin piece of plywood sitting loosely in the frame. No insulation, no weather stripping, nothing. I mean, no wonder it's freezing in that hallway. I've seen some DIY videos online about adding foam board insulation or weather stripping around the edges, but I'm not exactly handy. Like, I can handle basic stuff, but if it involves complicated cutting or measuring, um... let's just say my track record isn't great.

Has anyone tackled something like this before? Is there a simple kit or product you recommend that's easy to install without needing a ton of tools or skills? Or maybe some clever trick you've used yourself? I'm open to anything at this point - just tired of feeling like I'm heating the attic instead of my house, you know?

Also, if you've tried something that totally didn't work or was a waste of money, please let me know so I don't make the same mistake. Thanks in advance!

Honestly, I didn't think it'd make much difference, but um... wow, the upstairs rooms are way more comfortable now. I'm in the Midwest, and winters here can be brutal. Foam board seems like it'd seal things up tighter, but it's pricier and a bit more of a hassle to cut and fit.
