Feeling good about my switch to composite tiles - worth it?

Not sure if it’s just the tiles or the new underlayment, though.

I noticed the same thing after our switch - rain sounds way more muted now. I’m pretty sure the underlayment plays a big part, especially with synthetics. As for color, ours is only two years old but still looks brand new. I’ve read some brands fade faster if you’re in constant sun, but up here it hasn’t been an issue. Replacing just the underlayment sounds like a hassle since you’d have to pull up at least some of the tiles to get at it… not something I’d want to tackle unless there was a major leak.

Funny, I actually thought the tiles themselves would make the biggest difference with the rain noise, but after we swapped ours out, it was still loud as heck until we redid the underlayment. Maybe it depends on the house? Our old place had a super shallow attic so maybe that’s why. And yeah, color fade - our neighbor’s went weirdly chalky after just a year in direct sun, so I guess it’s a toss-up depending on the brand or maybe just bad luck. As for replacing underlayment, just thinking about it makes my back hurt...

Yeah, underlayment makes a way bigger difference than most folks think. I used to assume the tiles did all the work too, but after helping tear off a couple roofs, it’s wild how much sound just that thin layer blocks. Shallow attic probably didn’t help either.
