Feeling good about my switch to composite tiles - worth it?

Interesting - I've always wondered if composite tiles really hold up to those wild weather swings. Did you ever look into green or living roofs as an alternative? I get they're not for everyone, but I've seen some folks in the Midwest swear by them for insulation and durability, plus the environmental perks. Curious if you considered it or if the climate just makes it a non-starter where you are.

I actually did a little research on living roofs, but honestly, I just couldn't see it working out here. Our winters are brutal - like, "will my car even start?" kind of brutal - and I kept reading about drainage issues and extra weight on the structure. Plus, the maintenance sounded like a full-time job. I get the appeal (who doesn't want a mini meadow up there?), but for my first house, I needed something more set-it-and-forget-it. Composite tiles felt like the safer bet, even if they're not as eco-chic.

That’s pretty much what I hear from most folks in cold climates. The weight from a living roof adds up fast, especially once you factor in snow load. I’ve seen a couple of projects where they didn’t account for that, and the joists started to sag after just a few seasons. Composite tiles are definitely more forgiving in that sense.

Curious - did you look at any insulation upgrades while you were redoing the roof? Sometimes people use the opportunity to add rigid foam or blown-in insulation, which can make a big difference with winter heating bills. If you’re already pulling off old layers, it’s a good time to check for air leaks or ventilation issues too. Just wondering if that came up during your project or if you kept it simple this round.

We actually thought about beefing up the insulation, but when we saw the price tag, it was a quick “nope” for now. The composite tiles alone stretched our budget more than I’d hoped. We did check for obvious leaks and added some spray foam around the bathroom vent, but didn’t go all-in with rigid foam or anything fancy. Maybe next time. For now, I’m just happy not to be shoveling bits of old shingle out of the driveway every spring…

- Composite tiles are a big step up from old shingles - less mess, less hassle every year.
- Insulation upgrades can wait if you’re not seeing major drafts or ice dams.
- I’ve done the “spray foam around vents” thing too - cheap and effective for small leaks.
- Honestly, I’d rather spend on a solid roof than fancy insulation if the budget’s tight.
- You’ll probably notice lower maintenance costs now, even if the upfront hit stung a bit.
