- Gotta say, I had the opposite experience with ridge vents. Mine didn’t make much difference—maybe my attic’s just weirdly shaped?
-
“Ridge vent’s been great for keeping the attic from turning into a sauna in July...”
- Ended up adding a solar attic fan, which finally helped with the heat and humidity.
- Composite tiles do seem quieter, though. Didn’t expect that either.
- Still trying to figure out if they’ll hold up in hail season... fingers crossed.

Totally agree—first rain after I switched, I kept thinking the storm missed us. As for hail, anybody else get nervous every time the forecast says “severe”? I’ve seen some composite hold up, but still bracing myself...

Yeah, that’s me every spring. I do like how quiet the composite is—rain used to sound like a drumline on my old metal roof—but I’m still not 100% convinced about hail. I’ve seen some composite tiles take a beating, but also a neighbor had a couple crack last year after a big one. Anyone actually had to file a claim yet? Wondering if insurance treats it any differently than asphalt or metal.
I had to file a claim after a hailstorm last year—composite tiles held up better than my old asphalt, but a few still cracked. Insurance didn’t seem to care what material it was, just that there was damage. Adjuster said composite’s about the same as asphalt for claims, at least with my policy. Honestly, I’d take the quieter roof over metal any day, but yeah... hail anxiety is real.
I totally get the hail anxiety—living in Colorado, I’ve watched storms chew up everything from asphalt to wood shake. When we switched to composite a few years back, it was partly for that peace of mind, but I still found a couple cracked tiles after a big one last spring. Insurance acted just like yours—damage is damage, no matter what it’s made of. I’m curious, have you noticed any difference in how hot your attic gets since switching? Our composite tiles seem to keep things a bit cooler than the old asphalt, but maybe that’s just me...
