One thing I haven’t seen mentioned much is how these composites handle moss and algae. Our old asphalt shingles would get those green streaks every spring, but the new stuff seems to stay cleaner. Maybe it’s the surface texture?

That’s interesting about the moss and algae. I’m in a pretty damp area (Pacific Northwest), and honestly, I’ve seen a bit of moss on composite, but nowhere near as much as on the old asphalt roofs around here. Could be the texture, or maybe just that composites don’t hold moisture the same way? Hard to say for sure.

I’m curious if anyone’s noticed if composite shingles get brittle over time like asphalt does. My neighbor’s roof is about 12 years old (composite), and he mentioned some corners chipping off after a cold snap last winter. Is that just normal wear, or maybe something to do with how composites age in colder climates? I always thought they were supposed to be more durable, but maybe there are trade-offs depending on where you live...

I’ve noticed the same thing with moss—my old asphalt roof was a magnet for it, but the composite I put on a few years back stays way cleaner. As for brittleness, I haven’t had issues yet, but our winters aren’t super harsh. Maybe it’s just one of those things that depends on the brand or how much sun/cold your roof gets? Either way, I’d still take composite over asphalt any day.

Funny, I had the same moss problem with my old asphalt shingles too—looked like a science experiment by the end. Switched to composite last year, and it’s still looking decent even after a wet spring. I do worry about brittleness down the line, but honestly, not dealing with that green fuzz is worth it for me.

That green fuzz is relentless, right? I’ve seen moss turn a whole roof into a slip-n-slide after a wet season. Composite does seem to hold up better against that stuff, but yeah, brittleness can sneak up—especially if you get hail or wild temp swings. Still, not having to scrub moss every spring feels like a win in my book too.

That moss is no joke—last spring I was up there with a broom and nearly slid off myself. I went with composite for my place, partly because I’d heard it’s less of a magnet for that green fuzz, but now you’ve got me thinking about the brittleness. I’m in an area where we get those wild temp swings and the occasional hail storm, so I wonder if I traded one headache for another. Has anyone noticed if composite actually cracks more after a few years, or is that just a risk during installation?
