That’s a fair point about flashing—metal roofs are only as good as their weakest detail. I’ve seen plenty of “bulletproof” installs get wrecked by one loose piece after a storm. The green roof route isn’t for everyone, but I’ve noticed the same thing: critters just don’t seem interested, and wind uplift is way less of a headache. The upfront cost stings, though, and root management is a real thing—had to snake a drain last fall when some sedum roots got ambitious. Still, for me, the trade-offs have been worth it.

I ended up installing a root barrier fabric after my first round of clogged gutters... didn’t realize sedum could be so persistent. The upfront cost made me hesitate too, but honestly, the reduced wind worries and lack of critter problems have been a relief. - Agree that "doing a quick walk-around after any major weather event" is smart—I've caught clogged drains after storms that would've cost me way more if left alone.
- My place has a pretty basic sedum setup, but even then, roots sneak into the seams if I don't keep an eye out. Noticed it mostly after heavy rain, not so much in dry spells.
- Curious how often folks actually find issues during these unscheduled checks? I feel like sometimes I'm just looking for trouble, but then again, the one time I skipped it, I missed a small tear that turned into a leak.

I’ve definitely found more issues than I expected during those post-storm checks—usually minor stuff like loose flashing or pooling water, but once it was a split seam that would've been a nightmare if I’d missed it. As for costs, I started tracking after a nasty leak a few years back. Regular maintenance has been way cheaper in the long run, at least for my setup. Still, sometimes it feels like overkill, but the peace of mind is worth something too.
