I was in the same boat last year—got tired of climbing ladders every fall. Finally bit the bullet and installed gutter guards myself. Honestly, it's not rocket science if you're handy. Just measure your gutters carefully, pick a sturdy brand (avoid the flimsy plastic ones), and set aside a weekend. Saved me a ton of hassle this season...and yeah, more time flipping burgers beats scooping soggy leaves any day.
Did the same thing a couple years back, and yeah, gutter guards are a lifesaver. But honestly, even with guards, I still find myself checking things out once or twice a year—especially after heavy storms. Leaves aren't the only issue; sometimes birds or critters decide to set up shop. Still beats the heck out of climbing ladders every other weekend though...more time grilling, less time balancing precariously on a ladder.
Do you find the gutter guards worth the upfront cost? I've been debating it for a while now...still doing the ladder dance every spring and fall. I mean, critters setting up camp sounds like a whole other headache—do you just shoo them away or is it more complicated? Honestly, I'd love to spend more weekends grilling burgers instead of fishing soggy leaves out of gutters.
I installed gutter guards about three years ago after getting tired of climbing ladders twice a year. Honestly, the upfront cost did sting a bit, but here's how it played out for me:
First, I spent some time researching different types—mesh vs. foam inserts vs. reverse curve—and ended up going with stainless steel mesh guards because they seemed most effective at keeping debris out without letting critters nest underneath. Installation was straightforward enough; took me a weekend afternoon with basic tools.
Since then, I've barely had to touch the gutters. Maybe once a year I'll do a quick visual check, but that's about it. As for critters, haven't had any issues yet (knock on wood). The mesh is tight enough that squirrels and birds can't really get in there easily.
If you're still on the fence, maybe try installing guards on just one section of your roof first to see how it goes? Could be a good compromise before committing fully. Either way, fewer ladder trips definitely means more burger-grilling weekends...which is always a win in my book.
Good call on the stainless mesh—foam inserts were a disaster for me. They clogged up fast and ended up being squirrel condos. Switched to mesh last spring, and so far, so good...haven't touched 'em since. More grilling, less ladder climbing sounds perfect.
