I've wondered about gutter guards too... my neighbor installed some last year and swears by them, but I've also heard stories of debris still getting stuck underneath. I'm still debating if they're worth the investment or just another homeowner money pit, lol.
"I've also heard stories of debris still getting stuck underneath."
Yeah, I've seen that happen quite a bit during inspections. Gutter guards can definitely help reduce maintenance, but they're not foolproof. Leaves and small debris still find their way in sometimes, especially if you've got trees close by. Honestly though, if cleaning gutters is something you dread or tend to put off (like most of us...), guards might still be worth it just for the reduced hassle factor alone. Just don't expect them to be completely maintenance-free.
I usually try to tackle mine twice a yearβonce in late spring after all the pollen and seed pods have dropped, and again in late fall once most of the leaves are down. Learned that schedule the hard way...years ago, I ignored the gutters for a whole season thinking my gutter guards had me covered. Next thing I knew, there was a mini forest sprouting up there after some heavy rains. 😂
Honestly, guards do help a lot, but they're definitely not set-it-and-forget-it. I've found that if you have trees nearby (especially those pesky maples or pines), you'll still get buildup underneath or around the edges. Best bet is to just plan on checking them at least once or twice a year anyway. It's way easier to clear out a little debris regularly than deal with clogged gutters and water damage later on.
Twice a year sounds reasonable, but honestly, even that's pushing it if you've got heavy tree coverage. I've seen gutter guards fail plenty of timesβespecially with pine needles. Those things slip right through and build up underneath, creating a soggy mess. I'd say spot-check after big storms or windy days too. It takes like five minutes to glance up there, and trust me, it's way better than dealing with water damage or mold later on... learned that lesson the hard way myself.
Twice a year is usually my baseline too, but do you think gutter guards are even worth it then? I've been tempted, but if pine needles slip through anyway, seems like money down the drain (literally...). I usually just grab a ladder and gloves after big stormsβtakes ten minutes tops to clear out the trouble spots. Cheaper than dealing with mold or leaks later. Curious if anyone's found a gutter guard that actually handles pine needles well?
