when do you usually tackle gutter cleaning?

Gutter guards can be a lifesaver, sure, but honestly, I've had mixed results. Installed some mesh screens a couple years back thinking I'd finally conquered the gutter beast...but nope. Turns out my neighborhood squirrels saw them as a personal challenge. They chewed through sections, built cozy little nests, and basically turned my gutters into their own private Airbnb.

Also, about pine needles—you're spot on there. Those things are sneaky. I swear they defy gravity and physics just to wedge themselves into places they shouldn't be. Even with guards, I've had to climb up more often than I'd like because those needles just slip right through or pile up on top.

I've actually shifted away from the twice-a-year schedule entirely. Now I just keep an eye out after big storms or windy days and do quick spot checks when I'm already outside doing yard work. It's less of a chore that way—just a quick glance rather than a full-on gutter marathon.

One thing I will say though: timing in fall is tricky. Wait too long and you're freezing your fingers off trying to scoop out icy sludge (been there, done that). Too early and you're basically volunteering for double duty. My sweet spot is usually right after the bulk of leaves drop but before the first real freeze hits.

But hey, if anyone figures out how to negotiate peace with squirrels, let me know...

Have you tried the solid covers instead of mesh screens? Mesh seems like an open invite for squirrels and pine needles alike. Solid guards aren't perfect either, but maybe they'd discourage your furry Airbnb guests a bit more...

I switched to solid gutter covers about two years ago, and honestly, it made a noticeable difference. Before that, I had mesh screens, and I swear the squirrels treated it like their personal playground. Every fall, I'd find pine needles wedged in so tight that cleaning became a weekend-long chore. Solid covers aren't perfect—still get some buildup here and there—but the squirrels seem less interested, probably because there's less grip for their tiny paws.

Funny side note: one morning after installing them, I watched a particularly determined squirrel slide right off the gutter edge. He was fine (landed in the bushes), but I took it as a small victory. Anyway, you're on the right track considering solid covers. They won't solve everything, but they'll definitely cut down on your furry visitor problem and save you some headaches down the line.

I've been considering solid covers myself, but I'm curious—have you noticed any issues with heavy rain runoff? I've heard mixed things about water overshooting the gutters during storms, especially if the roof pitch is steep. My mesh screens are a pain, but at least they seem to handle downpours pretty well. Wondering if there's a trade-off there...

I've got solid covers on mine, and yeah, heavy rain can be a bit of an issue sometimes. My roof pitch isn't super steep, but during those really intense storms, water does tend to shoot right over the gutters in a couple spots. Still beats cleaning out soggy leaves every few months though... Mesh screens drove me nuts—always clogging up with tiny debris. Guess it's just about picking your battles.
