You nailed it—clay tiles are gorgeous, but in our winters, they’re like putting a snowman in a sauna. I’ve seen folks try every trick in the book to keep them from cracking, but freeze-thaw cycles just win out. Asphalt’s not glamorous, but it’s like that old pair of boots you keep around—never lets you down. Metal’s solid too, but yeah, it can sound like someone’s bowling up there when the hail hits. If you’re not chasing curb appeal for resale, I’d say stick with what keeps you dry and off the roof.

Never thought I’d care this much about roofing, but here we are. I looked into clay because they look amazing, but the cost plus the risk of cracking in cold weather just killed it for me. Asphalt isn’t exciting, yeah, but it’s way easier on the wallet and holds up fine for us. Metal tempted me, but the noise during storms is a dealbreaker—my neighbor says it’s like living inside a drum set. For now, I’ll stick with asphalt and just try to keep up with regular checks before winter hits.

I get the noise complaint—metal roofs can be loud if there’s no soundproofing. Personally, I went with a green (planted) roof last year. It’s not cheap upfront, but it’s cut my cooling bills and handles our Midwest winters surprisingly well. Maintenance is a bit more involved than asphalt, but I like the insulation and stormwater benefits. Not for everyone, but worth considering if you’re looking for something different.

Clay tiles have always looked great to me, but I’ve hesitated because of the weight and the cost. Around here (central Illinois), I don’t see many homes with them—maybe too much hassle with snow loads? Green roofs sound cool, though I’d worry about leaks if you ever get a roof puncture. Has anyone run into issues with insurance when switching to something non-standard like that?

- Clay tiles do look awesome, but yeah, they’re heavy. Around here, you’d probably need to beef up your rafters, which adds to the cost. Not impossible, just more work.
- Snow’s a legit concern. Tiles can handle it if installed right, but ice dams and freeze-thaw cycles are rough on them. Seen a few crack after bad winters.
- Insurance can be picky about non-standard stuff like green roofs. Some companies want extra inspections or even charge more. Had a buddy who had to shop around after switching to metal because his old insurer wouldn’t touch it.
- Green roofs are cool for insulation and stormwater, but leaks are a pain if you don’t have a solid membrane underneath. Maintenance is higher than most folks expect.
- If you love the clay look, there’s lightweight alternatives now—synthetic tiles or metal that mimics tile. Not cheap either, but easier on the structure.

Honestly, no perfect roof out there... just depends what headaches you’re willing to deal with.
