Yeah, insulation is definitely a biggie, but another thing I've noticed is attic ventilation itself. If your attic isn't venting properly, moisture can build up pretty fast, especially in winter when warm air from inside meets the cold roof decking. Had a job last year where the homeowner swore up and down it was a leak—turned out their soffit vents were completely blocked by insulation someone had blown in years ago. Cleared that out, added some ridge vents, and problem solved.

Also, don't underestimate bathroom exhaust fans venting directly into the attic. Seen that more times than I'd like to admit. People think it's fine because "it's just steam," but all that moisture has to go somewhere... usually ends up dripping back down at the worst possible moment. Always worth checking those fan ducts too before you start tearing shingles off or chasing ghosts around the roof.

Had something similar happen on a job recently—homeowner was convinced the roof was leaking, but it turned out their bathroom fan was venting straight into the attic. Moisture built up and started dripping down exactly where you'd expect a leak. Easy fix once we rerouted it outside. Definitely worth checking ventilation first before chasing phantom leaks... learned that one the hard way myself.

- Had a similar scare last winter—thought my roof was toast.
- Turned out insulation around the vent pipe was just terrible, condensation built up and dripped down like clockwork.
- Still skeptical about how much ventilation actually matters though... seems like every contractor has their own theory.
- Curious, anyone find attic fans or extra vents actually helpful, or is it mostly hype?
- Don't wanna drop cash on something unnecessary, but also don't wanna deal with mystery drips again next year...

Yeah, I've noticed the same thing—opinions are all over the place. Wonder if climate plays a bigger role than people realize... anyone here noticed differences after adding vents in colder vs warmer areas?

I've worked with a few different crews now, and honestly, it's like every roofer has their own gospel when it comes to ventilation. That said, I used to be pretty skeptical myself until we did a job last winter in a colder climate. The homeowner had constant condensation issues—those annoying midnight drips you're talking about. We ended up adding ridge vents and soffit vents, and the difference was actually noticeable. Not saying it's always a miracle fix (I've seen it do basically nothing in warmer, humid areas), but it definitely changed my mind a bit about colder climates.

Climate probably does matter more than some contractors admit. Maybe that's why opinions vary so much... everyone's experience depends on where they're working most often. Either way, your skepticism's fair—it's good to question stuff rather than just accept whatever the latest theory is.
