Noticed some water stains on the ceiling upstairs after the last couple heavy rains, and after poking around a bit, I'm pretty sure it's the flashing around the chimney that's causing the issue. Climbed up there yesterday (yeah, that was fun...) and saw that the flashing looks kinda loose and rusty in spots. I'm not exactly Mr. Handy, but I've done a few small projects around the house before—nothing major though.
Watched a couple YouTube vids, and it seems doable, but I'm a little worried about messing it up worse or missing something important. Anyone tackled something like this before? Is it worth trying myself or should I just bite the bullet and call in a pro? Don't wanna spend a fortune if I don't have to, but also don't wanna end up with a bigger mess down the road, you know?
Had a similar issue a couple years back... thought it'd be a quick fix myself. Ended up spending half a weekend climbing up and down, swearing at rusty flashing. Got it patched eventually, but honestly, next time I'd probably just call someone.
Been there myself, and yeah, flashing can be a pain. But if you're budget-conscious and wanna give it a shot, grab some roofing sealant, clean off the rust first, then apply generously. Might buy you some time at least...
Yeah, roofing sealant can def help, but have you checked how bad the rust is underneath? I patched mine up once without fully cleaning it, and guess what happened next rainstorm... drip drip drip. Lesson learned, lol.
Roof sealant can def buy you some time, but honestly, if you're seeing rust already, it's probably a bit past the quick-fix stage. Had a similar issue at one of the properties I manage—thought I'd be the hero landlord and patch it myself. Long story short, ended up with a soggy ceiling and an even soggier ego when I had to call in the pros anyway. Sometimes DIY just stands for "Damage It Yourself," lol.
