Is air sealing the better first attic upgrade?
When an attic already has insulation, how do you decide whether the next dollar should go toward sealing air leaks or adding more insulation? I’d want to know both how much insulation is there and whether it’s evenly covering the attic floor, but depth alone may not tell the whole story.
What signs help identify worthwhile leaks around an attic hatch, plumbing penetrations, or top plates? And how should ventilation and moisture concerns affect the order of work? I’m curious when sealing first makes the most sense, and when thin or patchy insulation should take priority.

Your ventilation point matters most at the eaves: before adding insulation there, check that soffit air can still travel into the attic. If the insulation would block that route, baffles can preserve the airflow path; otherwise, adding insulation may restrict ventilation and raise moisture concerns. Air-sealing and insulation choices should account for that path, not just the depth on the attic floor.
